Twin Cities Visualization HackDay

Last Saturday I attended the Twin Cities Data Visualization Hack Day.  About 45 people were there and some impressive visualizations were demonstrated.

Many of the hackers in attendance wanted to learn D3.  I hadn't even heard of D3 until the event, but decided to give it a try.  I worked with organizer Alan Palazollo and others to come up with ways to visualize a geotagged dataset of robberies in several Minneapolis police precincts.

After trying a few different routes, I settled on a basic solution that plotted the crimes as a SVG layer over a Leaflet interactive map:
